Why We Love Baking with Hemp

Hemp bread is one of the most exciting things to come out of our bakery in a long time. Apart from being incredibly tasty and the perfect accompaniment for a range of wonderful spring flavours, it creates a new benchmark in sustainability for us.

While there seems to be a hemp version of everything these days, it’s a trend we believe is here to stay.

What makes hemp so sustainable?

● Hemp plants are carbon-friendly. Hemp sequesters 8 to 15 tonnes of CO2 per hectare cultivated per year. This is significantly more than other plants, trees or regular grains like wheat, oat and rye.

● Hemp farming benefits soil because the plants have a deep root system. It helps to improve the health of ‘infertile’ soil so that other crops can grow there, too.

● Hemp can be grown without pesticides as it is naturally hardy and resistant to pests. Another win for soil health.

● There are so many other uses for hemp across various industries, making it low waste.

Taste the future with us

Baking with hemp is one of the ways in which we are bringing our Small Steps initiative to life, with our aim to contribute to a healthier environment. Next time you visit a Le Pain Quotidien, pick up a loaf of hemp bread or share a hemp egg mimosa tartine at our communal table. Now making sustainable choices tastes great, too!
